Teeth Cleanings

&

Dental Exams

Dental cleanings and examinations are the first steps toward maintaining excellent dental health.

•  Cleanings are an important part of preventive care because it helps remove plaque, tartar, food particles, and bacteria from your teeth. These appointments should occur at least every six months; not only will this prevent gum disease and tooth decay, but it can also prevent more serious ailments, such as heart disease.
•  Examinations help our dentists to assess your dental health and recommend a course of action. An examination can be as simple as a check-up, which includes an assessment of the gums, teeth, jaw joint (TMJ), and bite, or it can be more involved through diagnostic tools such as x-rays, which can reveal teeth and bone structure that cannot be seen with the naked eye.

Oral Cancer Screening

Cancer screening can be a frightening scenario for some people, but it should not be. The truth is oral cancer screenings done consistently offer you the opportunity to discover problems early when they can be treated more easily and successfully. If you have questions about our oral cancer screening procedures, then please visit our office so our professional staff can guide you through the procedure.

Dentistry for Kids

Pediatric dental care is a field of dentistry that specializes in the oral health and treatment of children and adolescents. Pediatric care focuses on prevention and management of normal tooth development and eruption, maintenance of dental health throughout childhood into adolescence, and treatment of disease as it’s experienced by children under the age of 18.

Educating our young patients on how to take care of their teeth is a key part of the pediatric care we offer. We will also teach parents about how to help their children understand why it’s important to brush and floss properly, as well as encourage dental checkups for everyone in the family.

Senior Dentistry

Geriatric dentistry includes both patients over the age of 75, and patients who are younger but suffer from chronic illness, or physical and cognitive impairment. There are some elevated concerns for the development of caries, periodontitis, and other ailments including oral cancer in geriatric patients. Our staff at Smile Makers Dental Center can help our patients better understand these conditions, and advise them on both oral hygiene routines to incorporate at home, or treatment if needed, going forward.

Periodontal Care

Your periodontal (gum) tissues are just as important as your teeth. Periodontal disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in the United States. Periodontal disease is the result of an infection in the gum tissues, connective ligaments, and eventually the alveolar bone.

The disease is characterized by gums that are swollen, red, and tend to bleed during brushing and flossing. Luckily, periodontal disease is easy to prevent and treat if it is caught early enough. If we notice signs of advanced periodontal disease, we may recommend a scaling and root planing procedure. The goal is to return your gums to a pink, healthy state.

Fluoride Treatment

Fluoride is a naturally-occurring mineral found in many of our foods and beverages. It is also a useful tool in fighting tooth decay. Every day, our teeth lose and gain minerals through the processes of demineralization and remineralization. If the process of demineralization exceeds that of remineralization tooth decay will occur. Professional fluoride treatment allows us to supplement the process of remineralization and prevent potential decay. It can even reverse minor instances of decay. Fluoride treatment is particularly beneficial for patients at a greater risk of tooth decay, such as children, teens, and seniors.

Mouth Guard

A mouthguard will protect your teeth and prevent dental emergencies. If you suffer from bruxism (teeth grinding), we may recommend a night guard. Many patients with bruxism tend to grind their teeth during sleep. A night guard acts as a barrier that prevents enamel wear.

Sports Guard

Contact sports or sports with moving objects can be a very dangerous environment for your teeth. One extreme tackle or a ball hit into the mouth can do serious, sometimes permanent, damage to the jaw and mouth. If you participate in physical activities that put you at risk for dental trauma or injury, we strongly recommend a custom made sports mouthguard.
