Do I Need an Extraction? The biggest reason to extract a tooth is if it is simply too decayed to save. It is important when this occurs to remove the tooth as soon as possible so the decay and disease do not spread to other teeth or into the gums. If it reaches the gums, it can easily enter the bloodstream and spread throughout the body which will complicate treatment. There are two types of extractions employed by our office. The first is the easiest and the most commonly performed. It is called a simple extraction. A local anesthetic is employed to the tooth and the surrounding gum tissue to ensure the patient is adequately numbed while the procedure is occurring. We use instruments to delicately work the tooth free of the gum tissue. For the more complicated extractions, a surgical extraction is required. Though more involved, it too, uses just a local anesthetic to numb the patient. When they are deemed ready, a small incision is made at the extraction site. This exposes the jawbone and the impacted tooth. When the extraction is complicated, the tooth can be broken into smaller sections to facilitate the extraction. After Your Tooth ExtractionAfter an extraction, it is important to adhere to a soft diet and rest. This will allow the extraction site to heal correctly. The length of recovery is greatly reduced when patients follow the instructions given to them. This will ensure no post-procedure complications arise. Do You Have a Tooth that Needs Extracted? While the idea of having a tooth extracted might cause some concern, when all other attempts have been made to save the tooth, the best solution is often to remove it. This prevents pain, infection, and possible damage to adjacent teeth. Why not come in to get answers to your questions at Smile Makers Dental Center?
