Periodontics

Woman smiling in a dental chairPeriodontics is a specialized branch of dentistry focused on the health of the gums and bone that support the teeth. General dentistry addresses issues related to teeth. Periodontics, on the other hand, concentrates on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of conditions that affect the underlying structures. Periodontics is crucial to maintain a beautiful smile, and for our patients to maintain their wellbeing overall. Untreated gum issues can lead to serious complications, including tooth loss and systemic health problems such as diabetes and heart disease.

Understanding Gum Disease

The most common condition treated in periodontics is periodontal (gum) disease. This condition is caused by bacterial plaque that accumulates on teeth along the gumline. When plaque is not properly and regularly removed through daily oral hygiene and professional cleanings, it hardens into tartar, which harbors bacteria and causes inflammation.

Gingivitis

The earliest stage of gum disease is gingivitis. This stage is characterized by red, swollen, and bleeding gums. However, gingivitis is still reversible with proper care.

Periodontitis

If left untreated, gingivitis can progress into periodontitis, a more severe form of gum disease that affects the deeper supporting structures of the teeth. Periodontitis can cause gum recession, bone loss, and, in advanced cases, tooth loss. The condition is also linked to systemic health issues such as heart disease, diabetes, and respiratory problems.

The Role of Deep Cleaning in Periodontal Care

When gum disease progresses into periodontitis, standard professional dental cleanings are not sufficient to remove tartar and bacteria from beneath the gumline. Scaling and root planing is a non-surgical, deep cleaning procedure used to treat early to moderate periodontitis.

During scaling and root planing, our team removes tartar and bacteria from the surfaces of the teeth, and below the gumline. Root planing smooths the roots of the teeth to discourage further bacterial accumulation, and help the gums reattach. Scaling and root planing can be uncomfortable, but we use local anesthesia to ensure our patient's comfort.

Deep cleaning is an essential step in periodontal treatment and maintenance. This halts the progression of gum disease and restores the health of the gums.

Periodontal Treatment and Maintenance for Long Term Health

Periodontal treatment and maintenance is required to preserve gum health. Keeping regular appointments is crucial for patients with a history of gum disease. This helps to prevent the condition from worsening or returning, and allows us to discover and address any issues quickly.

These maintenance visits typically include a thorough examination of the gums, a professional cleaning, and monitoring of gum pocket depths. If we detect signs of infection or inflammation, additional treatments may be recommended to keep the condition under control. Personalized home care routines, including proper brushing, flossing, and antimicrobial mouth rinses, are crucial to maintain periodontal health between visits.

Gum Graft Surgery for Receding Gums

Gum recession is a common consequence of periodontitis, aggressive brushing, or genetic predisposition. When gums recede, they expose the roots of the teeth, which leads to increased sensitivity, a higher risk of cavities, and concerns about appearance. Gum graft surgery is a highly effective periodontal procedure used to restore lost gum tissue and to protect tooth roots.

During gum graft surgery, we take a small piece of tissue from the patient's palate or a donor source, and attach it to the affected area. This procedure improves the appearance of the gums, and strengthens the protective barrier around the teeth. Patients who undergo gum graft surgery experience reduced sensitivity, a lower risk of further gum recession, and improved oral health.

Enhancing Aesthetics with Gingival Contouring

Periodontics also offers cosmetic procedures to enhance the appearance of the smile. Gingival contouring is also known as gum reshaping, and is a procedure designed to sculpt the gumline for a more balanced and symmetrical look.

Some individuals naturally have excessive gum tissue, leading to a "gummy smile." Others may have an uneven gum line that affects the symmetry of their teeth. Gingival contouring is the careful removal of excess gum tissue, and reshaping of the gums to create a well proportioned appearance. The procedure is often performed using laser technology, which minimizes discomfort and shortens the time required to heal.

Gingival contouring is primarily a cosmetic procedure, but can also improve oral health by reducing the risk of plaque accumulation in areas where excess gum tissue creates pockets or overlaps.

The Importance of Soft Tissue Grafting

Soft tissue grafting is a broader term that encompasses the various grafting techniques used to restore gum tissue. In addition to gum graft surgery, soft tissue grafting can be performed for other periodontal and cosmetic needs.

This procedure is highly beneficial for patients who have lost gum volume due to periodontal disease or trauma. Soft tissue grafting enhances the stability of the teeth and reduces the risk of further complications. The success of soft tissue grafting depends on proper postoperative care, which includes great oral hygiene at home, and being gentle on the gums as the graft heals.

Frenectomy: Simple and Effective

A frenectomy is another periodontal procedure that can improve oral health and function. The frenum is a small fold of tissue that connects the lips, cheeks, or tongue to the gums. In some cases, an excessively tight or thick frenum can cause issues such as gum recession, speech difficulties, or restricted tongue movement.

A frenectomy is a minor surgical procedure that involves removing or repositioning the frenum to alleviate these issues. This procedure is commonly performed on infants and children who experience difficulty breastfeeding or speaking due to a restrictive frenum. However, adults may also benefit from a frenectomy if the frenum causes gum recession or interferes with orthodontic treatment.

The Future of Periodontics

Advancements in periodontal care continue to improve treatment outcomes and patient comfort every day. Minimally invasive techniques, laser assisted procedures, and biologic therapies have revolutionized the way gum disease and tissue deficiencies are managed. These innovations allow for faster healing, reduced discomfort, and more predictable outcomes.

Researchers are further exploring the link between periodontal health and systemic conditions, which shows the importance of maintaining healthy gums for wellbeing overall. As the understanding of periodontics evolves, patients can expect even more effective and personalized treatment options.
