Inlays and Onlays

Joyful white woman showing off her beautiful teeth with a smile. There are several options available when it comes to the restoration of teeth when they are affected by cavities. One of the most common we use in treating cavities is a dental filling. If you are suffering from cavities or large gaps between your teeth, you may be in need of a filling procedure.

Inlays and onlays represent two of the most common filling procedures we have to offer. Inlays are used when addressing minor cavities and other types of minimal damage to the surface of the teeth. When the damage is more extensive and severe, we use onlays. These are used when the damage extends to the cusp of the tooth or to the root. Both options are cemented to the tooth after removing the damaged tissue. You can rely on Smile Makers Dental Center to help you choose the right filling option.

How Long Do Inlays and Onlays Last?

The life expectancy of inlays and onlays largely depends on the material they are made from. In years past, both were widely made out of gold. While gold is still used today, a much better aesthetically-pleasing option is porcelain. When choosing between porcelain and gold materials, you have to consider the different benefits of each. We recommend gold onlays because it is still the most durable material we have. Gold fillings can strengthen teeth by up to 75 percent. In addition, because they do not erode easily, gold fillings can last up to 30 years. When you visit us, we will start by determining your level of dental damage before recommending which type of dental filling will best work for your situation. Porcelain onlays also last a long time and are considered more aesthetically pleasing, which is why they are also a good option.

Inlays and Onlays vs. Dental Crowns

If you are looking for a restorative dentistry option for damaged teeth, we will provide you with all of the available possibilities to choose from. In most cases, clients who undergo filling treatments also have the option of getting dental crowns placed. It depends on the extent of damage to the tooth which restoration will work best. With onlays and Inlays, the procedure does not require the need to remove a major part of the teeth. You also have the choice of having crowns placed if there is need for additional restoration to cover and protect your tooth.

When Are Onlays and Inlays Needed?

These two types of dental procedures are both used when teeth are damaged whether from decay, disease, or trauma. Inlays are used as regular fillings but are far more effective. Onlays are used when traditional fillings cannot resolve the issue due to the severity of the damage.

If you have experienced dental damage, we have the solution. If you want to use inlays or onlays to repair the damage, we can help choose the best option available. Our experienced dentists will carry out a full exam to allow you to consider all your options. Contact Smile Makers Dental Center at one of our locations for more information.
